if you are from auckland, coming to christchurch is difficult in the sense that you can not, honestly can not, get your bearings. in auckland you are used to going up and down hills and seeing across the city constantly. for the past twelve years, the hypodermic needle that is the sky tower, has been a constant point of referral. prior to this it was generally one tree hill, mt eden, the harbour bridge, or simply just the sea.
christchurch has none of these landmarks, only the port hills, and often you can't even see those, either because of low cloud or smog, or simply because christchurch is so damn flat, you can't get an angle of view. i still get a little disorientated at times and think east is north and south is east.
