Day 245

still feeling pretty gross today, and i had a heap of work to get thru.  the weather was good tho so i put a load of washing on first thing.  just as the machine was starting the rinse cycle it stopped going.....dang it.  we'd had this happen before, it was a hairpin stuck in outwater pipe.  so since we 'knew' what was wrong and how it was fixed last time, i decided to have a go myself.  actually wasn't that hard...just makes a lot of mess when the remaining water (having hand emptied the machine) sitting in the bottom of the barrel comes out.  problem this time - matches.  yes, well... an entire box of matches had gone thru the washing machine a few days previously.
so after sorting it, i started the machine again, got a few loads thru and it stopped again.   argh!  emptied it again....started it again, same thing.  so apparently there were a fair few matches in the box.....feck!

second shoot today for the remaining pitch models.  i have to say it was a lot of fun.  wish i could have had more time with each of them to do some more interesting stuff, but for ease we had them all turning up at the same time, so you really didn't want to keep them hanging around. 
I managed to nab this shot at the end of the shoot with the last group of girls i shot.

ok, so it wasn't hayfever.  woke up with the most awful headcold and i had a full day ahead of me that i could not get out of.....
boy and i helped a friend from school out today with a shoot for his final series of work for the year.  we weren't assisting but modeling, and to add to the shame of it all we were in role reversal.  i figured i deserved to be in such a shoot for payback(in a round about way) to two of my mate's that i made do the same thing back in my first year - although i made them do it in a much more public way.
back into the studio at the end of the day for a shoot with the pitch models.  headshots for them all for a competition to win them a portfolio shoot with a talent agency.

had a busy day doing work on my images etc, but ended it with dinner at my cousins house.  it's always fun going there and hanging out with the kids, esp as they have totally warmed to boy now.  we still hadn't shown them the photos from the shoot we did with them back in september.  was great to look over them with them.
only downer was i seemingly have hideously bad hayfever.

boy has been doing a bit of 'trade me-ing' of late, so today we had to make a trip out to rangiora to pick up some stuff.  it was a stunning day, so we took a drive home the long way and did some shooting. 
have been wanting to do some 'distance' shoots with people being a small part of the photo, but the concentration point of the image.
this was one of the results from that.

final shoot today for feminism series....yipee.  had to do the hair again tho.  man i looked funny walking around town with rollers in my hair......didn't want to take them out until i was ready to click that button on the camera....my hair drops like no tomorrow.
walked into where i was shooting - which was where i work every now and then (and as i discovered later) the person i work most closely with didn't even recognise me!

catch up today with my girlfriend.  she nanny's and so we have a regular (or not so regular) catch up at the arts centre with her little charges.  monday's are often the day as she is in town for 'music class'.

'current day' shoot at the christchurch art gallery today.  needed a modern looking boardroom, and they had just what i needed...i love being 'connected'.
was going to try and shoot my office scene as well - mainly coz it was such an effort to get made up...but really wasn't appropriate...and hey, that's what it's all about aye, managing everything.
shoot went well...poor boys i'd asked to get dressed up in suits and come in - only needed them for all of 10mins.  I love my shoots, heaps of prep and then over quick smart!
onwards and upwards, one shoot to go.yuss!

went up to my friend pete's to finish off shooting the rest of his paintings for his exhibition catalogue.  it went relatively smoothly and i got some great images in addition to the previous shoot.  yuss!!!!  can't wait to see the final product - it's going to be awesome....it's like a record album cover, with pages inside of each painting....i reckon it's going to look pretty cool!

popped along to the model auditions for 'pitch' tonight and snapped a few shots.  pitch is the end of year fashion show for the students at the cpit fashion school.  the third years show a collection of work, and have to source their own models, where as the first and second years, show pieces from a range of genre's and get their models from these auditions.  this year was the largest turn out ever with over 150 models(from memory), pre-registering.  it was interesting, to say the least.

I'm really enjoying doing this series.  the body has so many interesting parts, that we often never look at, and the way that light defines the shape of the body is just, awesome.
the clavicle is one of those parts of the body that is looked at a lot, or maybe it's just me.  i love the shape, the concave-ness of it.  i love how in this photo it almost becomes this black hole leading to who knows where.

the boy and i headed out to his grandmother's today to send the arvo snapping.  his grandmother has this awesome property out past rollerston that has a number of different landscapes within it....fields, forest, garden, pond, sheds..the list goes on.
we did one of our co-ops, which can be seen here.  a little bit of a change in post-production to our other images!
did a whole variety of shooting....this didn't quite work out how i wanted it to...seems to be a bit of a reoccurring theme of late :(

without fail, every ten days or so, our kitty's get some flash dinner - cooked fish, salmon, chicken and the like.  why, because one of us always forgets to get cat food for the little darlings.  tonite i did the late mercy dash down to the super to get some food for the cat's, so they didn't have to be fed our dinner, for breakfast.

caught up with kat & matt tonite to hear the latest on the wedding, and for a general catch up really.  wedding plans have changed, again!  hehe - this could be a 'find out the venue the day before' wedding!  at least it'll be in the vicinity of akl, they've got that much sorted!




have been meaning to get a photo of 'flour power' for ages, and tonite was as good an opportunity as ever. i first heard of the artist, regan gentry, a few years ago when he had a exhibition at the dowse all based around gorse. i saw him interviewed and he had become obsessed with the stuff....even made gorse cake. i found it so interesting, using this widespread weed as inspiration and to therefore create so many different pieces of art around it.


the following year 'flour power' was commissioned by the public art advisory group and installed in central chc as part of the scape biennale in 2008. the concept is similar to views close to my own...probably to many. all in all, it's a great piece of art, particularly at night. similarly his pieces that were outside te papa, look great during the day, awesome at night.

speech/presentation day.   oh man, the poor kids....
i managed to blabber on for nearly an hour, but it was not by any stretch of the imagination exciting or interesting...my voice sounded terrible.  oh well, it's done.
tonite we went over to a&a's to show them the wedding photos.  had a few disc drama's - see below....me being anally retentive was not impressed.  oh well serves me right for leaving things to the last minute (really had no excuse with this one).
anyway, we went over to their place and showed them the photos, thankfully they loved them....yay!  job well done team
so although i had a busy day, i kinda forgot, probably coz it was so busy, to take a photo.....so starting earlier than i anticipated i'm starting my 'body' series....
for the next while, if something 'significant' isn't happening on any particular day, i am going to shoot a body part.....some will make sense, some not so much.....i start today with what originally gave me the idea - the inside of my wrist

i was contacted during the week to shoot some workshops that were happening in town with a group of refugee's, who were working together to create an exhibition, The Mixing Room: stories from young refugees in New Zealand. the exhibition is for te papa, and i am simply documenting the process, but there is a possibility that they will be shown with the exhibition at te papa.
today they had a creative writing workshop, not the easiest thing to photograph in an interesting way, but it was interesting to witness, and listen to.
next weekend i am shooting a screenprinting workshop, which should be a little easier.
tomorrow i have to give a presentation/talk to the first years at school about me, and my work, etc.   eeeeek.  so tonite i had to create my presentation.....so i went into school to finish it, along with working on the last of the wedding photos which we are giving to the clients tomorrow.  i seriously have no idea what i am going to talk about tomorrow....it's all just ugh.

went for a little drive to see what we could achieve with our camera's....as per, once i got up there i was totally unmotivated....grrrr - so annoying!  more planning for next time maybe - or just less wind please wind-maker!!  it was such a stunning day, but ugh the wind once you got up the hills,  not cool.
drove back through sumner and picked up my friend pie after and went to 'under the red veranda', a cafe i had only recently heard of, but now am in love with.  it's exactly what i have been looking for, in the city, but somewhere you can sit outside and not be next to a dirty street! likey very much.  was great to have a good catch up with pie too.  we are both so busy, we rarely get to catch up.  a better end to the day, than start :)
this evening had a mate's 21st.  damn i feel old when i go to these things....and boring! i managed to stay awake for a reasonable amount of time, thanx to my new party indulgence....my bag of lollies.  bugger is i still get a hangover in the morning.....a sugar one.

did part one of a two part shoot of a friend's paintings today. he is exhibiting at jonathan smart gallery in november and needed photos for his catalogue. so exciting!

these works aren't small (as you will see), so photographing them was not easy, neither was avoiding glare as the works have a coating and are oils. but overal it was a heaps of fun. the works are amazing, particularly coz of their size, but also the subject matter.
so looking forward to seeing them all finished and up in the gallery.

yuss! shot my first two location shots today for my series....man it's taken a while, but everything worked out pretty well and came together nicely.  i have once again become the model for my shoots (let's be honest here, they wouldn't be kirsty shoot's if i wasn't, would they?)  needed a bit of a trim prior to shooting.  have to say mr jo-nathan didn't do too bad a job, particularly considering he was using embroidery scissors!
shoot's went well, and having a quick play around tonite, they are going to work - yipee!
